The EPA reports that last year more than 70 million tons of pollution were emitted into the atmosphere in the United States. While we love living in the Cincinnati area, we know that a lot of that pollution is in larger cities like ours. And what’s in the air will eventually end up in your home and, if you’re not careful, your lungs. With numbers like these, the importance of IAQ is very clear: For the sake of your health, you need to make sure you’re taking care of the air in your home!
So, what role does the air filter located in your home’s HVAC system play in this? It may surprise you, but a pretty big one! Read on to find out more, and learn why air filter installation might be the right call for you.
What Does an HVAC Air Filter Do?
Air filters installed in a heating and cooling system are designed to filter out harmful particles from the air. This includes dust, pollen, mold spores, dander, smoke, and a few others. Filters are rated according to the MERV rating system, which essentially states the smallest diameter of particles the filter can trap, measured in microns.
When you have a good, clean air filter, you can expect it to trap a good percentage of the particles present in your air. This protects the HVAC system from clogging, and protects your respiratory system, too! For the best results, air filters should be changed every two months at a minimum, and in higher-pollution areas like a city, monthly is better.
There are also a lot of benefits to be had from upgrading your standard HVAC air filter to a polyester pleated air filter. These filters have a higher rating, last longer, and trap far more pollutants. We don’t typically recommend HEPA air filters for residential HVAC systems, however. These can actually over-filter to the point of restricting airflow in a standard heating and cooling system, potentially leading to overheating.
What Is an Air Cleaner?
Air filters play a big part in keeping your home air free of dust and debris. However, they can only do so much all on their own. If you’re looking to truly clean the air in your Cincinnati home, an air cleaner might be the long-term solution you’re looking for. An air cleaner is an electronic air filter that is installed directly within your HVAC duct system. From here, the electrostatic filter pulls dust and pollution from the air, attracting them and effectively trapping them.
An electronic air filter installation can provide a bunch of big benefits, including:
- Removing up to 99.98% of particles down to 0.1 micron
- Eliminating common home odors
- Reducing the presence of VOCs from indoor air
- Protecting your HVAC system from airflow restriction
