Tricks for Raising the Thermostat Temperature and Still Sleeping Cool at Night
Air conditioning is great to have on a blistering summer day, but let’s face it…it’s not cheap. If you’re looking for ways to save money on energy bills, the Schneller Knochelmann Plumbing, Heating & Air team has come up with some helpful tips that will allow you to raise the temperature at night on your thermostat,
yet stay comfortable enough to fall asleep. Shoot for 78 degrees to save on your cooling bills. Setting your temperature even five degrees lower can make your air conditioner use up to 40% more energy!
Take a Cool Shower
Take a cool shower right before you go to bed. This will lower your body temperature making you more comfortable which should help you fall asleep faster.
Use Cotton Sheets
Cotton sheets are the best fabric to use to stay cool. They allow the air to move and increase circulation.
Use Your Ceiling Fan
Make sure your ceiling fans are on and the blades are pointed downward so the air hits your skin. Moving air creates a wind chill effect by helping the moisture on your skin evaporate faster, making you feel cooler.
Use Additional Fans
Set up a small oscillating fan in your bedroom so it blows air on you all night. This will make your skin feel cooler as well.
Make a Cool Buddy
Take a bag of beans or rice (the kind you can heat in the microwave to relax muscles) and put it in the refrigerator instead. It will keep you cool for 30 minutes to an hour and will help you fall asleep faster.
Change Your Sleep Style
If you sleep with a partner, don’t snuggle. Instead, sleep as far apart as possible to keep from sharing each other’s body heat. If you wear pajamas, wear light fabric. If you can sleep without pajamas, do.
Keep Your House Cool
The cooler you keep your house during the hours before you go to bed, the cooler it will feel and stay all night. Try not to use the oven on hot summer days, turn off lights when not in use and use exhaust fans to remove heat and moisture if you shower or do cook on the stove.
Eat Smaller Meals
Swap big meals for smaller, lighter dinners. Smaller meals are easier to metabolize which will help your body stay cooler than a large filling meal.
